Maurer

Born in Potsdam, Germany, Ludwig Maurer (1789 –1878) began his musical life as a violinist. He left Germany for Russia in 1806 and worked in St. Petersburg and Moscow as a violinist and conductor. Maurer was a virtuoso performer who gave the Russian premiere of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and spent considerable time touring in Europe in the 1820s. He began composing during that period and eventually amassed a substantial body of work including four operas, a symphony, ten violin concerti and six string quartets.
