Soliloquy, Epitaph and Allegro was commissioned by James Montgomery in 1988 and premiered a year later in the U.K. with Organist Willis Noble at Eton College.
The work is for advanced performers and about eleven minutes in length. The first movement is marked "Freely". The second, lyrical in a moderate tempo, in Memory of Alan Paton. The third, an Allegro with much rhythmic intensity.
