Details

A World Beyond for Tenor/Bass Trombone and Piano was written for Denis Jiron and premiered at the International Trombone Festival in London Ontario, July 2025. A consortium of artists contributed funds towards the creation of this brilliant new work, bringing it to life.

Here is what composer Elizabeth Raum says about her new work for Tenor/Bass Trombone and Piano.

This piece for piano and bass trombone was inspired by the Hubble Telescope as it moves through space, sending images of The World Beyond back to Earth. My son works on the creation of these telescopes that tell us the secrets of the universe by means that are beyond my comprehension but have often been an inspiration for my music.

The opening introduction of the World Beyond is based on the whole tone scale implying the vastness of a universe with no boundaries. The following sixteenth note ostinato, like twinkling stars, continues throughout, connecting the images being transmitted by the telescope to Earth, each having its own character. A tranquil theme in G major midway through heralds the sunrise, appearing several times culminating in a climactic Grandioso, but then the music returns to its journey through space.

The work is suitable for advanced performers and is almost 10 minutes in length.
