The exercises have never been published before and were used only by a handful of Smith's students including legendary trombonist Per Brevig, who has written a beautiful introduction.

The exercises in this book are concerned with the problem of coordination of tonguing and slide movement-and the accuracy of that movement. Absolute control of the tongue is essential to obtain evenness in rhythm and volume....The slide must be moved smoothly and continuously, varying the speed so as to be in the correct position as the tongue stroke occurs.
The book contains 45 exercises (plus a number of important orchestral excerpts) ranging from intermediate to advanced technique in Professor Smith's own beautiful calligraphy, and will give every performer all the tools necessary to perfect their slide technique.
