The Sacrae symphoniae of 1597 by Giovanni Gabrieli stands as an immense contribution to music. It is important historically (the first directions giving for loud and soft playing) and musically with so many gorgeous instrumental motets and choral works for the liturgy. Also, the use of spatial properties in the performance venue by using separated or antiphonal groups to create dramatic stereophonic effects.

Sancta Maria succurre miseri for 7-part Trombone Ensemble is a polyphonic styled motet which has been beautifully arranged in the key of E-flat by Flavio Pannacci. The instrumentation is for 2 alto trombones, 3 tenor trombones and 2 bass trombones. The text in Latin roughly translates into Holy Mary, help the wretched. It is a plea to God to intercede and invokes the Virgin Mary to offer support and comfort to those in need. With God's might they will become strong.

This work although not technically or physically demanding is suitable for advanced performers only given that each part has its own melodic line and rhythmic identity.
