Barat

Joseph Edouard Barat (1882-1963) was born in Paris, the son of a soloist with the Republican Guard Band. He studied at the Paris Conservatory with Paul Vidal and George Caussade. He became a military bandmaster in Lyon and later in Paris. He twice failed the exam for the Director of Music of the Republican Guard, but made history by creating a school for assistant Bandmasters. Barat retired in 1933 and became conductor of the renowned Sirene Band in Paris which he led until 1944.
