Combs
William Combs is a freelance trombonist providing orchestral, solo, chamber, and commercial performances, and brass instruction throughout West Texas and Colorado. Also active as an arranger, Dr. Combs has written for brass ensembles, string ensembles and marching bands with a focus on expanding the Renaissance repertoire and symphonic transcription literature for brass ensemble.
As a performer, Dr. Combs currently holds positions with the Lubbock Civic Orchestra (principal), Colorado Mahler Festival (second trombone/associate principal), and the Frontier Big Band. He has also performed with the Bayerische Philharmonie (guest principal), Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, Boulder Chamber Orchestra, Cheyenne Symphony (WY), Arapahoe Philharmonic, Longmont Symphony, Denver Philharmonic Orchestra (principal), Colorado Wind Ensemble, Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, and William and the Romantics. As a solo and chamber musician, he has been featured on concert series, performing with members of The Cleveland Orchestra and the Lamont Wind Ensemble.
Dr. Combs is currently the Instructor of Brass for Lubbock Independent School District and maintains an active private brass studio of students from age ten to adults. From 2016-2017, he served as the Instructor of Trombone in the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Colorado Boulder and has also taught or given masterclasses at the University of Wyoming, Texas Tech University, University of Colorado Pueblo, Cherry Creek High School, Douglas County High School, Arapahoe High School, and Legacy High School.
Dr. Combs completed his D.M.A. in Trombone Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado Boulder (2019), M.M. in Trombone Performance at the University of Denver (2013), and Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance and Bachelor of Music in Music Education both from Texas Tech University (2011).
