Attracted to music at an early age, Tom Senff began his musical studies at the age of seven with piano and trumpet and later switched to saxophone in the high school band. Following was a stint in the Navy during which he began the study of trombone and string bass and played in Navy post bands.

He then began his formal schooling with a Bachelors in Music Composition from North Texas State University where he played the jazz chair in the 1:00 lab band, his Masters in Music Theory from the University of Kentucky and the Doctorate in Trombone Pedagogy from the University of Illinois where he performed with the U. I. Jazz Band.

Between college degrees he played with the road bands of Lionel Hampton, Ralph Marterie, Warren Covington, Stan Kenton and Woody Herman.

17 years of college teaching experience include Georgetown College, the University of Missouri, the University of Illinois, Ball State University, the University of Kentucky and Morehead State University, teaching trombone, theory, jazz piano, jazz studies and jazz band ensembles.

He is a former free-lance musician on trombone, bass and piano and his arrangements for big band and trombone ensemble are nationally known.
