John van Deursen is Head of Instrumental Ensembles at Douglas College in New Westminster BC, Canada, where he leads the Concert Band and teaches trombone. A student of Gordon Cherry at the University of British Columbia and then Frank Crisafulli at Northwestern University, John performed as Principal Trombone of the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra from 1989 until 2003 and appeared as its Guest Conductor on many occasions, including a European tour that featured a tongue-in-cheek pops arrangement of "Crazy" that he was commissioned to write as a special encore. John currently also teaches at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and UBC.
