20 Modern Studies for Trumpet bridges the gap between tonal music and more difficult atonal literature with 20 twelve-tone studies primarily in the middle and lower registers. Musical settings vary from lyrical to marcato with tempos ranging from adagio to allegro. Each study’s tone row of twelve notes is used only in prime (original) or retrograde (reverse) forms that are transposed throughout the study while retaining the intervals of the prime and retrograde. The first study is intervals of seconds followed by studies focusing on thirds, fourths, tritones, fifths, sixths and sevenths. Fourteen different time signatures are presented, but beat subdivisions are not complex, facilitating precise rhythmic execution. Atonal music need not be barren of musical expression when combining creative interpretation with technical accuracy the music can be vibrant and exciting.
