Praise the Lord with Drums and Cymbals by Sigfrid Karg-Elert has been beautifully arranged by Mark J. LaFratta for Brass Quintet and is one of 33 “portraits” he composed in 1924 in the style of composers he admired. The “portraits” were originally for harmonium, an instrument that was small enough for homes and are generally pumped with foot pedals. He later published the portraits for larger pipe organs. The composers he chose for the portraits included Bach, Mozart, Palestrina, Rameau, Mendelssohn, Brahms and even Scriabin and Schoenberg. This was No. 5 of the set, subtitled Alla Handel.
The music became famous amongst brass players in the 1960’s when it was on the E. Power Biggs and Columbia Brass album of great works for organ and brass. This is an arrangement for brass quintet only of this classic and familiar sounding work.
