Poetic Nostalgia is a lovely 9-minute work by Patrick Pengqiu Zhang for Trumpet in C, Tenor-Bass Trombone and Piano suitable for advanced performers. This work gives lots of opportunity for expressive work from each of the three performers and will make a great addition to a brass chamber music recital.
Here is what the composer says about his new work.
Poetic Nostalgia was inspired by a family journey to the Arctic, driving from Vancouver to Tuktoyaktuk—the northernmost town that is accessible by road. Standing by the Arctic Ocean, the crystal-clear waves and the bright, pristine blue sky felt like a painting—profoundly serene. In today’s world, such stillness is a rare and a precious gift.
Yet the current global situation is fraught with tension. Our world is caught in turbulent currents, and the peace and tranquility we long for seem to be drifting further away. The ever-spreading flames of war have displaced countless civilians, torn families apart, shattered beliefs, and pushed societies backward.
Through this composition, I hope to bring warmth and hope to the world—to carry to listeners a distant voice that awakens a deeper awareness of our shared human destiny. As John Donne wrote, “Each man’s death diminishes me, for I am involved in mankind.”
No man is an island.
