For trombonists, mentioning the great Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky usually conjures up thoughts of great orchestral works and grandiose symphonic playing. Here though, iTromboni’s  Andrew Poirier has crafted a beautiful trombone quintet arrangement of two movements from one of Tchaikovsky’s more intimate chamber works, his:

String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 11.

1. Andante Cantabile
2. Scherzo

The original second movement, Andante Cantabile, is one of the most famous pieces Tchaikovsky ever wrote and its marvelous melodic lines are delicately passed between each trombone voice. This is followed by the third movement which is an upbeat Scherzo, full of energy, rhythmic drive and syncopation.

Each movement can be performed on its own or together as this beautiful 10-minute suite.

This arrangement has been created to showcase each member of the quintet with both beautiful lyrical solos and demanding technical passages.
