Details

Lieutenant Kijé by Sergei Prokofiev was composed in 1934 to accompany the film of the same name first released in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) the same year.

A brief description of the plot is the story of a slip of the pen creating a fictional officer in the Russian Army. The Tsar inquires about this Lieutentant Kijé and the story of the phantom officer's career gets spun out of control to ridiculousness by the hapless bureaucrats including a wedding to the Princess, troika (sleigh ride), bonus money, promotions, death and finally a lavish funeral. The Tsar was NOT pleased!

Prokofiev subsequently composed an orchestral suite which has become quite popular.

Randall Malmstrom has arranged two of the movements: Wedding and Troika for 5-part Trombone Ensemble appropriate for advanced performers. About 5-minutes in length.
