Fanfare for the Dance (The Sun Also Rises) for Orchestra by American composer Betsy Schramm is a new work commissioned by the Corpus Christi Symphony in honor of their 75th Anniversary.
Here is a description of this exciting shimmering work by the author, Betsy Schramm:
Fanfare for the Dance: The Sun Also Rises celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra! Bravo! Our treasured music institutions are so important and I congratulate this ensemble on its commitment to performing symphonic music for this city for over 75 years! I was delighted when the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra asked me to write this fanfare in honor of their 75th anniversary.
The title has a twofold meaning. Fanfare for the Dance speaks to a celebration of the power of music, its drive and propulsion that bring us to our feet with our toes tapping! The Sun Also Rises references a sigh of relief at how many music organizations weathered the global pandemic and continue to thrive. It also refers to how music can lift us to the dawn of a new day. The fanfare’s opening flourishes build to a climax leading into a repetitive dance pattern that leads to solo trumpet. The dance pattern resumes and then encounters two trumpets. These three elements continue to recombine throughout. Percussion rhythms and color help propel the motion forward as do flourishes form the winds and strings. Additional elements, the staccato baroque-like passage and the tutti triplets, offset the original elements. The flourishing opening is restated in a new key and leads to a full tutti triplet ending. In this fanfare I spotlight the city’s natural beauty as exemplified by the energy of it’s symphony orchestra.
This exciting, shimmering and dramatic work is about 3 minutes in length.
Instrumentation is for 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 3 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 4 Horns, 3 Trumpets, 2 Trombones, 3 Percussion (Vibraphone, Xylophone, Chimes, Wind Chimes, Snare Drum, Tam-tam, Glockenspiel, Tam-tam, Temple Blocks, 4 Tom-toms), and Strings.
