Guessing Game for 8-part Trombone Ensemble by Willard Zirk was commissioned in honor of Trombone Professor Donald Babcock of Eastern Michigan University and is based on variations on the musical letters D B A B C contained in Donald BABCock's name. The work challenges the listener to "Guess" not just the musical era, but the compositional style and even a possible composer.

Here is a description of the new work by the composer.

The music proceeds chronologically, passing through the style periods of medieval, baroque, classical, romantic, 20th-century, and finally, jazz; I wanted to include jazz because Prof. Babcock is an excellent jazz trombonist and improviser.  There were several more styles/composers that I wanted to explore but the piece would have ended up being an hour long.

This work is about 8 minutes in length, suitable for moderately advanced performers in 2 choirs of four and all parts are in bass clef.

The recording below is beautifully performed by Mike Hall, Professor of Trombone of Old Dominion University and available on his album Hooked on Polyphony.
