The Quartet for Trombones, Bassoons or Cellos by Harry Freedman was composed in 1973. One of the finest Canadian composers, Freedman probably was inspired to write this work while teaching at the Courtenay Youth Music Centre in British Columbia.

The work is about 7 minutes in length and explores chordal dissonances, syncopations and colors of four-part writing (using different mutes for the trombone version). The opening and closing of the work features intense, fast repeated 16th note passages with a more gentle middle section that is contemplative.

Quartet is appropriate for advanced performers and contains tenor clef in all four parts in various parts of the work (see PDF sample).

The studio recording (minus the first 2 minutes) by the CBC from 1980 features the Sinfonia Trombones (Vancouver Symphony trombone section of Gordon Cherry, Greg Cox, Tim Skeldon and Doug Sparkes on Bass Trombone).
